Mexican Mountain Water Washed Decaf Specialty Coffee

A richly flavoured decaf that doesn’t compromise on taste. Decaffeinated using a chemical-free mountain water process, with a darker roast for a more intense, full impact flavour.

Decaf done properly

A good decaf is harder to find than it should be. The process of removing caffeine inevitably changes the bean, and many decafs on the market reflect that in the cup – flat, papery, or just a bit thin. This one isn’t. Water processing is the method we favour because it extracts caffeine without using chemical solvents, and when it’s done well, it preserves the complexity and flavour of the original bean.

You’re looking at approximately 98% caffeine removal. There’s a small trace remaining, but for most people avoiding caffeine it’s negligible. The flavour, though, is very much present.

An honest word about the environment

Decaf has a slightly higher environmental footprint than standard coffee – there’s no way around that. The decaffeination process requires specialist facilities, which use more energy and water in the coffee processing. Because the green coffee has to be transported for decaffeination at special facilities, this means the green coffee travels further before it reaches the consumer. We think it’s worth being upfront about this. What we can say is that water processing avoids the chemical alternatives.and when chemicals are used they can create additional negative environmental impact and may also impact health and well-being.

Freshness matters even more for decaf

We store our roasted decaf coffee correctly until dispatch; please do the same once it arrives. This is especially important for decaf coffee because it tend to go stale faster than coffee which hasn’t been de-caffeinated. Airtight container, cool dry cupboard, away from light. And if you’re not going to use it quickly, freeze it in portions rather than leaving it open on the shelf. If you can buy your coffee as whole beans and grind it as you use it, even better.

How to brew it

You can use whichever method you prefer for a delicious cup of decaf coffee but a V60 pour-over or AeroPress will both give you a reliable, clean-tasting decaf.
